Unit 1 Proposal
As I said in my in-class free write, I have a very structured life. I go to class, the library, and the golf course on a daily basis. On weekends and sometimes during the week when I do not have a lot to do, I may go out with friends but overall my life is structured. I find it kind of funny how closely I follow a daily routine like my father does. He goes to the office, the YMCA, and then possibly to the golf course after work. My parents will go out to eat but not very often because my dad loves to cook. I am going to branch out and observe people at Starbucks. I am going to do my observations on a weekday afternoon when there may be college students studying or people out running errands coming into Starbucks. This public space is appealing to me because it is mostly foreign to me. I really do not like coffee and I really have never liked to atmosphere at Starbucks but, I want know why people like the environment at Starbucks. I am very curious as to why people study there. I tend to only study well in seclusion, somewhere quite and always alone. I believe that my studying habits are like this because I am always around others so I like the change of pace when I study. I expect and hope to find reasons why people like the atmosphere and environment at Starbucks. Maybe they just like the coffee but maybe they find it relaxing. Some of my pre-conceived ideas that may influence my objective observation are people at Starbucks do not serve the same views as me or they may be very different from me. I believe that for me to be successful in my findings, I must put aside some of these pre-conceived notions and simply observe the people and workers in Starbucks. Maybe I will find a new place to relax, study, or simply hung out but maybe I will find some answers and some inspiration for my first paper.

I think you will like Starbucks for your paper! I am a coffee drinking and find my self going at least every-other-day but I think you should go at all different times of day because their really is a different crowd at every different time and day. I love that you can admit to having a structured life because I do as well (sometimes when it changes it really messes me up). I tried to study at Starbucks once and it was tragic! I ended up people watching for a hour instead of studying at all!

ReplyDeleteI like the idea of visiting Starbucks because you have never really enjoyed it. I think that it is going to be hard for you to really for you to grasp everything that the company is arguing (the same problem everybody else will have), but after enough time and though you will be able to fully appreciate that atmosphere. I also think that it might be an interesting portion of you paper if you were to visit different starbucks and try to analyze their differences. Good luck man.

I think that Starbucks is a good idea, especially since it's kind of a new place for you. Starbucks has become such a huge part of America in what seems like just a couple of years. While you're there you might look at their logo. I've always found that to be quite interesting. Good luck. I hope you find some reasons for other liking it and maybe even be able to enjoy it a little yourself.
ReplyDeleteI think its a great idea for you to observe starbucks, especially since you are not a personal fan of the place. You will probably be the only one in our class that could go into the space with hardly any preconcieved bias towards it. I agree with ashley when she adivsed that you should definitely go in at very different times because I think that the differences in crowds will totally shock ya. I hope you find an appreciation for starbucks, and if not that, atleast discover a new drink! goodluck!
ReplyDeleteWill,
ReplyDeleteWow. I have never met anyone who found Starbucks foreign! That is absolutely fascinating in-and-of itself. I'm completely looking forward to your findings and what you think about Starbucks. My own father is absolutely in love with Starbucks, so we go all the time when he's in-town. I think since you've never been, your research and findings will be all the more interesting.
Good point Will i also dont see what the big WOW factor about starbucks is. Everyone talks about it as if it is the greatest thing eveer invented intersted to see what you find.
ReplyDeleteWill,
ReplyDeleteYou've chosen a great public space, and I'm curious to read your analysis since you're a self-proclaimed Starbucks "foreigner." You mentioned spending time there on weekdays, but remember that you should observe the space on multiple occasions, varying your time of day/schedule. It's important to get a well-rounded experience so that you can make meaning of the space as an informed observer.
